Job Description

Assistant Attorney General

The Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General is looking for an attorney to join the Civil Rights Division (CRD). The successful candidate will be strongly committed to the mission of the Division, which is to protect and advance the constitutional and statutory civil rights and liberties of residents and visitors to the Commonwealth.

The Civil Rights Division works to prevent and remedy discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics in order to ensure equal opportunity and safeguard constitutional rights for all. The Division is particularly committed to serving vulnerable and historically marginalized individuals through community-informed, culturally and linguistically appropriate, and data-driven legal advocacy and affirmative legal action. We strive for equity, underscoring the importance of intersectionality and racial justice. Embedded in the Division are units dedicated to protecting individuals and communities impacted by issues of children's justice, disability rights, and police accountability. The Division works to ensure equal opportunity and constitutional rights in areas such as housing, public accommodations, employment, education, healthcare, criminal justice, immigration, and voting.

Primary Duties: The Assistant Attorney General will conduct investigations; litigate cases in state and federal court; develop policy initiatives; review and mediate complaints from members of the public; review and draft amicus briefs and proposed legislation; and conduct outreach with community and advocacy groups, including through speaking engagements and attendance at community meetings. Candidates should note that engagement in litigation related to federal accountability is likely.

Position Requirements:

  • Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or have a pending application for admission.
  • Civil investigation and/or litigation experience, preferably including large-scale investigations and complex litigation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Division and experience working directly with or on behalf of members of the public, especially historically marginalized communities.
  • Excellent research, writing, and advocacy skills.
  • Experience with public speaking.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including other attorneys and staff.
  • Prior experience in civil rights or related areas of law and experience in housing or employment is a plus.
  • Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), Vietnamese or Haitian Creole, is a plus.

Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date. Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as 'Counsel' and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve and an interest in supporting a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

Position Type: Full-time/Exempt

Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions. On in-office days, employees are required to report to one of our designated office locations, either in Boston or at a regional office.

Salary: $84,134 to $125,572, commensurate with JD year and experience.

The application deadline for this posting is October 1, 2025, at 5:00 PM (ET). Qualified individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. We will gladly assist applicants who need an accommodation. For assistance, please contact the Human Resources Division at (617) 963-2932.
